Kathmandu University has awarded degrees to 1465 graduates till September 2002; of them 853 were the products of its constituents schools. Further, the distribution degree-wise is two PhDs, 229 MBAs, 31 MPhils, six MScs, four MPharms, 407 BEs, 84 BPharms, 75 BScs, 11 PGDEs and four BAs (Music).
The main objective of the follow-up study is to assess the employability rate of the graduates and to find out what needs to be improved at KU to enhance the demand for its graduates in the market.
Six hundred ninety eight graduates (82 percent of total graduates) could be reached for the study. The web-based questionnaire was used to collect information and overwhelming responses were received.
Out of 698, almost all of PhDs, MPhils, MScs (Environmental Science), MPharms and Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)graduates responded. However, responses from others were about 80 percent which include MBAs (187/230), Bachelors of Computer Engineering (BEC) (77/93), Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering (BEMech) (80/99), Bachelors of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (BEEE) (162/215), Bachelors of Environmental Science (BScE) (60/75) and Bachelors of Pharmacy (BPharm) (78/84). However, the study doesn't cover BA (Music).
Regarding the current status of the graduates, of 698 respondents, 490 (70.20%) are employed including self-employment, 144 (20.20%) are enrolled for further studies or multiple degrees, and remaining 64 (9.59%)cases are unresolved i.e., not known whether they are employed, self-employed, unemployed or enrolled for further studies.
Of 603 graduates who provided the information regarding time lapsed between graduation and employment or further study, 428 (70.97%) were employed within five months of graduation, 90 (14.92%) started to work only after five months but within one & half years and remaining seven (1.16%) got into job thereafter. Furthermore, 28 (4.64%) graduates had enrolled for further studies within five months, 34 (5.63%) only after five months but within one and half years and remaining 16 (2.65%) thereafter.
Out of 634 graduates who have clarified their current status, 498 are in Nepal, of them 459 (92.16%) are employed and 39 (7.83%) are enrolled for higher studies. Further, 136 graduates who are out-of the country 31 (22.80%) are employed and 105 (77.20%) are enrolled for higher studies.
The employment pattern shows, majority, that is 21 percent of graduates are engaged in knowledge industries, i.e., either education or research. Besides, 18 percent of the graduates are involved in government organizations (the probability of joining government organization is relatively high in case of BEEE graduates) and the rest 82 percent in non-governmental organizations.
Only 417 graduates provided their salary ranges. Among them, 224 (53.71%) are earning monthly salary of 10,001-20,000 Nepalese Rupees, and 32 (7.67%) are earning even more than 50 thousand per month. However, 101 (24.22%) graduates are earning monthly salary of less than Rupees 10,000. Percentage of graduates earning more than fifty thousand is relatively high in case of BEEE graduates.
The graduates hold KU in very high esteem for its nice location, good student-teacher relationship, qualified faculties, timely examinations, regular classes, appropriate teaching methodologies, curriculum of international standard, quality education and dynamic leadership. Nevertheless, some graduates expressed their concerns for improvement like teachers turnover, inadequate research activities, lots of crash courses, lack of student exchange program with foreign universities, lack of industry-university interface, and social get together for alumni.
