What we did ?

Day 1

We started our trip at around 6 am, from Bus Park, Kathmandu and after eight hours of travel we reached our final destination “Jiri”. The owner of the Zurich hotel with whom we had initial contact welcomed us and showed us the way to the hotel. Then we visited the school  in Jiri-6,”Jem Academy” which was  half an hour away from the place we stayed. There we interacted with the principal. We requested the principal for the things we would require for our project which he gladly provided.

Day 2

On this day we revisited the school. We interacted with the teachers and some of the girls and made them familiar with our project. We took some feedback from them and that helps us to know about what extent they have knowledge about menstruation.

Day 3

We went to the school with all the requirements we brought from Kathmandu including the flex, sanitarynapkins, cloths and refreshments. After having some talk with the principal, we moved to the classroom of 26 girls who were from grade eight, nine and ten. Each of us gave the information related to menstruation and also taught them to make homemade pads. Nearly about conducting 3 hours of our program, at last we distributed sanitary napkins and sanitizer. Then we hiked up to Jireswor Mahadev with the students and then returned to the hotel we were staying in.

Day 4

The next morning we left Jiri to head back to Kathmandu at about 6:00 am.

How we did?

To reach the place,Jiri, we had to  travelled about eight hours by bus. After reaching the place,we straight  headed towards the hotel we contacted and after having some rest we walked around half an hour to visit the school. We had an interaction with the principal and we requested him for the things that required for our program. Then we left to the hotel that we were staying in. We waked up early in the morning the next day and prepared for all the requirements necessary for the program. To reach the school we again had to walk about half an hour, after reaching there, we  had some talk with the principal and teacher and then we moved to the classroom of 26 girls. We introduced ourselfelves and Six of us gave information related to menstruation. The remaining two trained the students to make homemade pads.We also had some questionnaire and refreshment program to have interaction with the students. After conducting for about nearly three hour we finally had an end to it.At overall point of view we had lots of fun with them.We handed the weighing machine and flex for their future use.At the time of leaving the school with the permission from the principal we hiked to the Jirreswor Mahadev with the students.

Why we did?

Confined on our objectives, we searched for the facts and figures related to women health and sanitation in the school of Jiri and the areas around. We studied the demographic, social, academic status of the school and the areas around. With this study we are able to determine the problems that young girls are facing during their periods. Also by providing them the information related to menstruation we can help them to control school abseentism. This will have a positive impact in their academic level.By making them aware, they can manage their periods hygienically and also they can have information about different abnormalities related to menstruation. If we provide training on making homemade pads and health education ,it will be of great importance to them in the sense it will lead to a healthy life and good impact on their study.
