Single Phase AC to AC Step Down Cycloconverter

The project that I have undertaken in this year is the design and realization of a single phase AC to AC step down cyclo-converter. Cyclo-converter is a direct frequency changer that converts ac frequency at another ac frequency by ac-ac conversion without an intermediate link.

This making of the cyclo-converting mainly compromises of the SCRs which will be fired by the firing circuits and commuted by the natural commutation alternately or as required to achieve low frequency as desired from the ac inputted.

In study phase, different power plants and a few industries were visited to study about its operating principle but unfortunately it hasn't been implemented anywhere. So the extensive study was carried out about its scope and basic design method.

In the next phase, practical realization and simulation of the design was carried out. This project has helped me understand the importance of power electronic components in the modern industrial development. So far till this period I am able to generate the output pulse for firing the thyristor using simulation in EWB. And for the practical implementation I have compared the ramp signal with reference voltage and generated the continuous output pulse which should be divided into four parts in such a way that they are used to trigger the thyristor.
