The faculty of the Department, Dr. Bed Mani Dahal, has been appointment as KU senate member (teacher's representative) from December 2015 for the period of three years. Senate is the supreme and authorised body of the university. Congratulation!.

International Conference on Forests, Soil and Rural Livelihoods in a Changing Climate
27 - 30 September 2014
Conference venue: Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel

The Aquatic Ecology Centre, Kathmandu University, and the Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric), University of Life Sciences, Norway, in collaboration with the Nepal Agroforestry Foundation, Forest Action Nepal and Department of Forest Research and Survey, invite papers and posters from scholars and researchers to be presented at the International Conference on “Forests, Soils and Rural Livelihoods in a Changing Climate” to be held in Dhulikhel, Kavre, Nepal, during September 28-30, 2014. The conference is an outcome of the Norwegian Research Council supported project “Forest and Soil Restoration and Land Use Change Impacts on Carbon Pools and Fluxes in the Himalaya: Research and Capacity Building in Nepal, (FORESC), which investigated different land use and forest management effects on soil and biomass carbon stocks as well as implications for local livelihoods.

International Conference on Sustainable Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery

National Symposium on Pesticides Pollution
20 June 2014
Venue: Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel

The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering in collaboration with University Grants Commission, Nepal organized a day National Symposium on Pesticides Pollution on 20 June 2014.

The head of the department, DESE, Prof. Dr. Subodh Sharma opened the symposium by welcoming the participants. Dr. Sharma also discuss on the importance of the symposium. The symposium secretary and Associate Professor at DESE, Dr. Bed Mani Dahal, highlighted on the objectives of the symposium. Fourty-five people from more than fifteen organizations participated in the symposium. Total eight papers were presented mainly focusing on pesticides use/misuse in Nepal, analysis techniques of pesticides, pesticides residue in agricultural products (fruits, vegetables, fish and crops), pesticides contamination in soil and water, and policy issues on pesticide pollution.

Vacancy Announcement for position of Research Assistants (Fullfilled)

Background:

Department of Environmental Science and Engineering receives a research grant from Renewable Nepal Programme, the Programme is jointly managed by Kathmandu University (KU), Nepal, and SINTEF Energy Research (SEfAS), Norway, and it is funded by Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), for a year of 2013-2014 for conducting research project on “Enhancement of Poultry-litter-fed- Biogas Production System by Changing the Feedstock Composition and increasing the System Temperature for sustainable Electricity Generation”. To support and smoothly conduct the research, the project calls for application from enthusiastic and committed candidates to work as a Research Assistant. There are two positions available, one full time research assistant for one year and other full time research assistant for 8 months.

Responsibilites:

· Design a biogas plant for poultry waste
· Collect primary, secondary data required for the research project and analyze the collected data
· Prepare research report under the guidance of the Project Leader
· Any other tasks assigned by the Project leader
Qualification:

Candidates should have at least a Bachelor degree in either Environmental Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Those who are waiting for their final semester result are also eligible to apply. In addition, the candidate must have good communication skills both in English and Nepali.

Appointment Term: August 01, 2013 –July 31, 2014

Interested candidates are requested to send their CVs (no more than 2 pages) with letter of interest explaining their competence to undertake a research task.

A day symposium organized

One day Symposium on Environmental Assessment (EA): Trends, challenges, Prospects and Opportunities was organized by the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel on December 23, 2012 at CV Raman Auditorium. On the occasion, Dr. Sanjay Nath Khanal, Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering (DESE) delivered opening remarks. The relevancy of the symposium was highlighted by Dr. Nawa Raj Khatiwada, Program Co-ordinator and faculty of DESE. Dr. Bhadra Man Tuladhar, Registrar of Kathmandu University was also present during the opening session.
Dr. David Green, Mr. Bhai Raja Manandhar and Mr. Surya Man Shakya presented papers on different issues. The papers are available for download.

International Symposium on Mountain Resource Management in a Changing Environment organized.

The Aquatic Ecology Centre, Kathmandu University, and Institute of Forestry, Tribhuvan University in collaboration with the Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric), University of Life Sciences, Norway, successfully organized the symposium on “Mountain Resource Management in a Changing Environment” at Park Village Resort, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, Nepal, from May 29-31, 2012. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION INTO M. Sc./Pre-M. Sc.:
Students who have completed 4 years undergraduate programs in Environmental Science, Agriculture, Forestry, or other related field of study with minimum 2.5 CGPA or 50% or more in aggregate marks are eligible to apply. Fresh graduates from 3-year undergraduate programs will be required to take a 1-year pre-M.Sc. bridge course beginning in August 2011. Applications for the Pre-M.Sc. bridge course can be also submitted during the period specified below.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION INTO M. S. by Research in Glaciology:
This program is offered in collaboration with ICIMOD and funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Students having completed a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Hydrology, Meteorology, Geosciences, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or Civil Engineering with minimum 2.5 CGPA or 50% or more in aggregate marks are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to qualified female candidates, marginalized groups and candidates with sound health and high altitude field work experience.

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS:
Application forms are available at the administration office, School of Science, Block 06, Dhulikhel, Kavre, or on-line at the Kathmandu University, School of Science, Department of Environmental Science & Engineering website (Graduate Application Form). Submit completed application form and application fee of Rs. 800 along with photocopies of previous academic and citizenship certificates to the department office at Dhulikhel, Kavre.
Last date of submission of application is 25th August 2011.
Only short listed candidates will be informed to appear for interview on Friday, 26th August 2011. Orientation and classes will commence from Sunday, 28th August, 2011.

International Conference on ECOREC – Ecosystem Responses to Environmental Change

Aquatic Ecology Centre on behalf of the Kathmandu University (KU) invites the scientific community to the "International Conference on ECOREC – Ecosystem Responses to Environmental Change to be held from November 13-17, 2010 in Nepal. The main purpose of this conference is to address the issues of recent environmental changes in soil, water, forests, air and climate. Biological assessment is gaining recognition as a practical, cost-efficient and effective approach for tracking environmental change.
