  PROGRAMS

Mechanical engineers use the fundamentals of engineering mechanics, energy, thermal-fluid sciences and material sciences to design and analyze mechanical systems that perform useful tasks required by society. For example, mechanical engineers work with the design and function of machines, devices, and structures in the areas of manufacturing, processing, power generation, and transportation (air, land, sea and space). As a result of a rapidly expanding technology in recent years, mechanical engineers have become more versed in computer-aided design; robotics; bioengineering; environmental engineering; solar, wind, and ocean energy sources; and space exploration. The breadth of the field provides the graduate with many possibilities for a satisfying career.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers the following Undergraduate and Graduate Programs.

 Undergraduate Program:

Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (Full Time Only)(4 years)

This program is designed to produce mechanical engineers with strong technical knowledge, engineering projects handling techniques and as needed to the Nepalese industrial and technological market. The program in the first year consists of common inter-disciplinary foundation courses together with problem oriented project courses. In the second, third and fourth year of the program, intensive courses in the field of general Mechanical Engineering are offered.

The declared intention of Kathmandu University is to produce the Mechanical Engineering Graduates who are not only theoretically knowledgeable but also have a sound practical base. Hence, Engineering Projects are undertaken each year to extend the student's academic and practical development.

Graduate Program:
Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (Full Time)(2 years)

This program is designed to produce engineers with strong foundation and advance knowledge in the areas of Engineering Design, Energy and maintenance, keeping particular needs of Nepalese Industries, research and development activities in mind. Research and practical skill are encouraged through project and dissertation work.

Master Program in Planning and Operation of Energy Systems (MPPOES)

(Full Time)(2 years)

The MPPOES is a newly launched program in the department and is a NORAD's master program within the enery and petroleum sector.

The course is designed and targeted for professionals from developing countries who want to have a career in energy sector in areas of planning and operations. The program is a sandwich type program comprising one semester study at NTNU, Norway and three semesters at KU, Dhulikhel, Nepal. The degree is awarded by KU mentioning one semester study at NTNU, Norway.

The program covers tuition expenses, living expenses with a fixed monthly stipend.
