MoU Signed between KU and SRSPU

On 21 November 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between KU and M.I. Platov South Russian State Polytechnic University, SRSPU (NPI).

Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, the Vice Chancellor, represented KU, and Rector Vladimir Perederiy represented SRSPU (NPI). The MoU signing was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Bhadra Man Tuladhar, former Registrar of KU.

The MoU targets to establish partnership in the educational and research fields through faculty exchange in the field of environment, ecology, mathematics and engineering. The MoU also envisions organization of joint workshops and seminars, exploration of student exchange possibilities and preparation of joint research proposals for funding from international supporting agencies.

First Program of Twenty-Third Convocation Held

The first program of the 23rd Convocation of Kathmandu University was held awarding degrees to the graduates of School of Medical Sciences.

This year 1189 graduates received degrees, including 4 in M.Ch. and DM, 115 in MD, 54 in MS, 3  in MDS, 2 in M.Sc., 571 in MBBS, 155 in BDS, 208 in B.Sc. (Nursing), 58 in BNS and 19 in BPT.

The Program was chaired by Mr. Gopal Man Shrestha, Honorable Deputy Prime Minister, Miniter of Education and Pro-Chancellor of KU.

Addressing the ceremony as the Chief Guest, Dr. Mohan Man Sainju,  distinguished scholar, planner and diplomat, said that KU has set itself as an exemplary university of Nepal, and suggested the students to believe in team spirit and proceed in life with a plan that is practical, attainable and appropriate.

Similarly, the Pro-Chancellor expressed the need of qualified human resources in deprived sectors and that the graduates had to implement their knowledge and skills in those sectors to give a new and better direction to the society and nation.

Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, the Vice Chancellor, urged the graduates to take the lead in their respective fields and to leave their marks for the generations to come. He advised them to challenge the convention the way KU did to change the landscape of health in the country.

Dr. Bal Chandra Luitel in HELTASA 2017

On November 21, 2017, Dr. Bal Chandra Luitel, Associate Professor and Associate Dean of School of Education conducted a 3-hour long workshop for researchers, academics and staff members across southern African universities during the 2017 Conference organized by Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of South Africa (HELTASA) at Coastlands Umhlanga Hotel and convention centre, Durban, South Africa.

Titled as “Transformative educational research as/for professional development”, the workshop was designed to share with the Southern African Researchers the Transformative education research practice promoted by Dr Luitel and colleagues at KUSOED.

Likewise, on November 22, 2017, Dr Luitel made a keynote presentation entitled Developing educational research as/for transformative professional development: A case of (post)graduate education research programme for a greater good, at the same HELTASA 2017 conference themed as HIGHER EDUCATION WELL-BEING: TRANSCENDING BOUNDARIES, REFRAMING EXCELLENCE. Dr Luitel argued for the case of multi-paradigmatic transformative research as a means for professional development of educational professionals working for empowering, life-affirming and authentic educational processes and outcomes. Of particular focus, Dr. Luitel argued for the case of epistemological pluralism together with the purpose of higher education as public good.

Scholarship Application Deadline in School of Science and School of Engineering

NOTICE

Submission of Scholarship Application in School of Science and School of Engineering

Financially needy and meritorious students newly enrolled in KU Undergraduate (Bachelor) and Regular Master Programs of School of Science and School of Engineering in Academic Session 2017/18 are hereby notified to submit their application for Scholarship/Financial-Support to the office of respective School Administration (Block-09 for Engineering, Block-06 for Science).

Please refer to the scholarship application form for details about the information and documents needed for application. Please duly fill the application form and do not leave any field blank in any section unless absolutely inapplicable in your case. The information and documents shall reflect actual financial/social conditions of the applicant and true academic potential.

Undergraduate students who are admitted in Academic Session 2017/18 are eligible to apply for “KU-Scholarship 2017” which in general is a partial tuition fee waiver.  

Master Level students admitted in Academic Session 2017/18 may apply for UGC Formula Funding Scholarship; the extent of scholarship is based on student number in enrolled program and is subject to approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The deadline for application submission is 01 December 2017 (15 Mangsir 2074, Friday).

World Toilet Day Celebrated

World Toilet Day was celebrated in Kathmandu University with slogan "Greening the Blue".World Toilet Day is all about inspiring action to tackle the global sanitation crisis. In 2013, the UN General Assembly officially declared November 19 as World Toilet Day.

The program started with an early morning awareness rally (from 6:30 am to 8:00 am) around Bhirkuti Mandap, Kathmandu, which was coordinated by professors and volunteering students. The formal event inside KU premises started at 10:00am in presence of honorable guests: Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, Ms. Bimala Sharma (Deputy Mayor, Dhulikhel Municipality), Prof. Dr. Kanhaiya Jha (Associate Dean, School of Science, KU); Mr. Surya Man Shakya, Visiting Professor at KU; Dr. Murali Gopal Ranjitkar (WASH Specialist) and Associate Prof. Dr. Nawa Raj Khatiwada.

The inauguration ceremony was addressed by the Vice Chancellor. He motivated the audience by highlighting the status of toilets in Kathmandu University and the seriousness of the issues with toilets in the University. He suggested that KU should set an example with its students taking initiatives by building new ideas rather than following the old ones.

After the opening remarks from the professors and guests, Dr. Khatiwada guided the audience and guests to a tour of toilets in the KU premises. The Toilet Tour included assessment of the selected toilets by focusing on the number of male/female toilets, their cleanliness, availability of water/soap/tissue paper/drier, ventilation, presence and functionality of doors, presence of dustbin, floor and walls, odour management, and capacity. Catering to the same number of male and female students, while there were male toilets that 20 males could use at the same time, the female toilets could be used by only 4 females at the same time.

The opening ceremony was then followed by Photo Exhibition, Poster Presentation and Essay competitions. Several pictures and posters depicting the conditions of toilets in different parts of Nepal were displayed for evaluation. Students from different schools competed in the Essay competition.

KOICA Nepal Donated 59 Books

On Sunday, 17 September 2017, KOICA Nepal donated a collection of 59 books related to Korean Language and Literature, to the Kathmandu University Central Library. The collection includes Korean textbooks, Korean modern novels, Korean modern poetry, and Korean classical poetry.

Ms. Eunji Sim, Korean Language volunteer for KU working at the Humanities and Management Unit, School of Engineering, handed the books to the staffs of the Central Library.

Faculties, staffs and students interested in Korea, and students who are learning Korean may refer to the following list of books.

GES Celebrated International GIS day

Geomatics Engineering Society (GES) successfully conducted the World GIS Day 2017 on November 15 in collaboration with Nepal Geomatics Engineering Society (NGES). The students of Geomatics Engineering organized the program as a representative from Nepal inviting all other respective organizations working in the field of GIS such as Build Change, Survey Department, NAXA Pvt. Ltd, ADMC Pvt. Ltd, GIS Pvt. Ltd and so on. The special guest in the program was Mr. Ashok Kumar Byanju, the Mayor of Dhulikhel Municipality.

Similarly, Mr. Ganesh Prasad Bhatta, Director General of the Survey Department, was the chief guest. Moreover, Prof. Dr. Narendra Raj Khanal (Head of Department of Geology, TU), Mr. Narayan Regmi (Executive Director of Land Management Training Centre), Ms. Shanti Basnet (Director of Department of Land Information and Archive) were the guests of the program.

The program was started with the opening remarks from the Head of Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering, Asst. Prof. Dr. Prachand Man Pradhan. In the program all the students, faculty and the professionals discussed the use of GIS in different fields like hydropower, forest fire risk analysis, climate change, land use classification, earthquake assessment, ice melt measure and even the emerging concept trending in Nepal i.e. Smart City.

The major events of the programs were: GeoSpace Magazine Launch, Mapathon event together with local bodies of Dhulikhel Municipality, Project Demonstration, Stalls of different companies showing their geospatial tools and technologies, Treasure Hunt and many more. Major topics of the talk were "Role of open data in development", "Role of GIS in integrated development of local levels", "GIS in academia and research at Kathmandu University."

Overall, the program was successfully conducted on the theme “Think globally act locally”.

Mr. Sujan Sapkota, Vice-President of Geomatics Engineering Society was the event Co-ordinator.

Department of Computer Science and Engineer organized an interaction program on the title “Digital Signature” on 16 November 2017. Mr. Biplav Man Singh, Executive Chairman, gave a talk  about what is Digital Signature and how it can be implemented in institution like Kathmandu University. Registrar, Exam Controller, Chief Administrative Officer, Professors and Administrative staffs of Kathmandu University attended the talk program.
