Regional Refresher Course on

“Building Flood Disaster Resilience of Cities-

Meeting Internal and External Challenges of the Future”

1st -11th October, 2012

This 11-day Regional Refresher Course 2012 on “Building Flood Disaster Resilience of Cities- Meeting Internal and External Challenges of the Future” is being organized jointly by the Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering of School of Engineering, Kathmandu University, Nepal and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, the Netherlands. The course begins on 1st October and ends on 11th October 2012. Around 22 alumni are participating in this Refresher Course and 10 national and international experts are sharing knowledge with them.

“To keep the skills and knowledge up-to-date and to stay in tune with changing professional demands” as quoted by the Rector Prof. Nagi, the UNESCO-IHE regional refresher courses are held annually in different locations, covering themes of direct relevance to these regions. The overall aim of the course is to strengthen knowledge and capacity of the alumni of UNESCO-IHE, working in the Asian region for the improved management of increased urban flood risk due to external and internal threats. Vacancy Announcement for Teaching Assistant for Laboratory Classes at DESE

 
Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (DESE) KU the School of Science, Kathmandu University is seeking a candidate in the position of Teaching Assistant for Laboratory classes on contract basis for six month. The incumbent will be stationed in the Pollution Laboratory of DESE and work under the direct Supervision of Head of the Department (HOD) of DESE.

 

Key Roles and Responsibilities

 

  • The incumbent will work in the Pollution Laboratory situated in Block-6 of Dhulikhel campus.  The candidate is also expected to work in the Full Scale Constructed Wetland facility of the Dhulikhel campus, Premises where Lysimeter and other pilot scale facilities are located.  Frequent travel to the sampling sites, treatment plants, other analytical laboratories in Dhulikhel and out-of Dhulikhel is expected.
  • The incumbent will prepare chemicals, sampling bottles, reagents and other essential items to run the experiments and analysis of the environmental quality parameters.
  •  The incumbent will receive instructions from the Faculty and Supervisors, conduct the laboratory sessions for the students and help students to run the experiments.
  • The incumbent will help students undertaking project or thesis to design the reactors or other laboratory scale operating units, collect parts or other items from the market or workshops, assemble the parts and operate the facilities.
  • The incumbent will collect samples and analyze various parameters as instructed by the Program Coordinator (PC) of Environmental Engineering (ENE) or HOD, DESE.
  • The incumbent will estimate the quantities of the chemicals, reagents or items essential in the analytical laboratory or the experimental facilities and keep record updated.
  • The incumbent will communicate with the School of Science Administrative and/ or Finance office in purchasing the chemicals, equipments such as pumps, incubators and samplers.
  • The incumbent will contact the supplier; receive the quotations and gets approval from the PC ENE or HOD of DESE and forward them to the office of the Dean for further processing.
  • The incumbent will ensure the smooth functioning of the facilities such as constructed wetland the lysimeter.  He / She will identify the issues, concerns and operational problems of these facilities and report to the concerned Supervisors.

 

Required qualifications and Competencies

 

The candidate is expected to have at least Four Years Bachelor Degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or in any other branches of Science. Prior Experience in any analytical laboratory would receive high priority in selection. Only short listed candidates will be called for an interview.

Russell E. Train Fellowship for Masters’ Degree for Nepalese students

Kathmandu University has received information about Russell E. Train Fellowship for Masters’ Degree for Nepalese students from WWF Nepal. Interested relevant students are encouraged to apply.

The Russell E. Train Education for Nature Program (EFN) aims to build a dynamic and highly qualified corps of conservation leaders in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Through Train Fellowships, EFN invests in the academic training of conservationists in a wide variety of disciplines so that they may gain the knowledge and skills necessary to manage natural resources in complex contexts. Russell E. Train Fellowships support individuals pursuing a master's or doctoral degree in conservation for up to 2 years.

Eligibility

-       You must be a citizen of Nepal.

-       You must be at least two years work experience in conservation.

-       You must commit of working in conservation at least two years after the completion of your degree in your home country or region.

-       You must be enrolled in, admitted to or have applied to a graduate degree program (Masters’ only) at an institution of higher education by the application deadline and you must plan to begin your studies no later than one year after the application deadline. You may study in your home country or abroad.

-       You must NOT have received a Russel E. Train scholarship or fellowship in the past. Those who have received EFN professional development grants may apply for a Train fellowship.

-       You must NOT be a current WWF employee or a long term consultant to WWF. Consultants with short term contracts with WWF may be eligible. If you are working for WWF, it is strongly advised that you contact EFN in Washington DC at efn@wwfus.org to make sure you are eligible before applying.

Priority Fields

Your field of study must pertain to one of the following:

-       A natural science discipline relevant to sustainable natural resource management, ecosystem services or biodiversity conservation in Nepal.

-       A social science discipline relevant to sustainable economic development or community based resource management in Nepal.

-       Your thesis should be focused in one of the following areas: endangered species conservation and management, community based resource management, forest carbon, payments for ecosystem services, climate change adaptations (monitoring, and/or vulnerability assessments), adaptation strategy and program development for key biodiversity, ecosystem and/or community targets, (preferably taking an integrated ecosystem-people approach), or environmental policy and law in Terai Landscape, Sacred Himalayan Landscape or Chitwan Annapurna Landscape in Nepal.

Benefits

-       Financial support for tuition, books, travel to and from the training institution, and room and board for an academic program for a maximum of US $ 20,000 (per year) for up to two years;

-       Limited cost for field research required by the academic institution to obtain the degree;

-       Long term professional development support through EFN Alumni program.

Because funds are limited, Train Fellows are encouraged to contribute to their educational expenses with personal or family funds when possible. In addition, EFN also strongly advises applicants to seek funding from other sources.

A six member delegation from Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences paid a visit to Kathmandu University on 13 September 2012 at Central Campus, Dhulikhel.

The delegation led by Professor Guiquan Liang, President of Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences, interacted with the KU authorities on possible areas of collaboration between two institutions. Other visitor members were Prof. Pingfan Lin; Prof. Aiqiong You; Prof. Meifen Luo; Prof. Zhihong Ren and Prof. Guangsheng Yang.

On behalf of Kathmandu University, Dr. Mahesh Banskota, Dean, School of Arts welcomed the delegates.

Confucius Institute at KU celebrates Chinese Teachers’ Day

On September 9th, 2012, Confucius Institute at KU (CIKU) celebrates the 28th Chinese Teachers’ Day at KUSOM where CIKU is located. In China September 10th is Teachers’ Day. Madame Wang Lixin, Deputy Chief of Mission at Chinese embassy in Nepal, Madame Zou Bin, Chief of Cultural Section at Chinese embassy in Nepal, Mr. Suresh Man Shrestha, Secretary at the Ministry of Education, attended the function along with all the Chinese teachers, Prof. Dr. Mahesh Banskot, Dean School of Arts, Dr. Sagar Raj  Sharma  and principals from Little Angels School, Venus Public School and Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM). They exchanged Teachers’ Day greetings and views of about Chinese language learning.

At the programme, Zhang Shubin, Chinese director at the CIKU, introduced Chinese Teachers’ Day and Chinese language teaching and learning in global context, stating that in some countries like India, USA, Britain and Australia have included Chinese language in their curricula. He made a proposal to the Ministry of Education to introduce Chinese as a foreign language in Nepali schools.

Madame Wang Lixin, Deputy Chief of Mission at Chinese embassy in Nepal expresses her thanks to all those who have contributed to Chinese language teaching and Chinese culture promotion in Nepal, and hopes more and more Nepalis will know better about China through Chinese language learning.

Secretary at the Ministry of Education Suresh Man Shrestha said that learning Chinese could benefit Nepalis, suggesting that Chinese language teaching be expanded in Nepal by the Chinese teachers’ efforts.

Eligibility: Students who have completed 4 years undergraduate programs with minimum 50 % in aggregate or 2.5 CGPA are eligible to apply.

 

Students who have completed 3 years undergraduate programs with first division or 2.5 CGPA, will have to undertake 1 year bridge course, in Biotechnology, to be conducted by the Department.

 Master by Research will be offered in, Food/Industrial Biotechnology, Cancer/Medical Research and Plant Biotechnology.

 M Tech. in Biotechnology course will be offered majoring  Industrial Biotechnology /Agriculture Biotechnology
