Workshop on Using CUDA

 

A workshop entitled “GPU Parallel Programming Using CUDA" was organized by School of Engineering during 13-15 November 2013. Altogether 25 students from various Departments participated in this Workshop.

 

Prof. Dr. Bim Prasad Shrestha, Associate Dean, gave a welcome speech. The resource person of the workshop was Professor Dr. Masatomo Inui. Dr. Inui is a full Professor at Ibaraki University, Japan.

 

The objective of the workshop was to train the graduate students about Graphical Processing Units. Students learnt about programming using CUDA language. During workshop, Prof. Inui also explained the Simulating Particles with OpenGL method.

 

Introduction to GPU Programming, GPU Architecture, CUDA Programming, Matrix Computation, Particle method with OpenGL graphics, Diffusion analysis and CUDA texture were some of the topics covered in the training.

Call for expression of Interest

 

Kathmandu University central campus Dhulikhel is setting up physical fitness center for students and staff. For the fitness center, physical shed house structure and gym equipment is required.

We intend to procure following packages,

Package 1:

Shed house with following specifications,

Shed house overall dimension 30 ft, width 20 ft height 12 ft

One gym room of 25 ft X 20 ft.

Two restroom/changing room each of  5 ft X 10 ft.

Package 2:

Gym equipments (Please contact KU physical facility or student welfare for equipment detail)

 

In this regards, we would like to call expression of interest (EOI) from local companies for the construction of shed house using locally available resources and technology.

Interested applicant should provide technical and financial details of the construction along with EOI.

Last date of submission is 7 Dec 2013.

M Phil Scholars' Presentations and Publications 
 
Four M Phil research scholars (Mathematics, batch 2011) have got their papers published in the International Journal of Landslide and Environment.

 

The articles are their research findings presented in the 11th International Symposium on Mitigation of Geo-disaster in Asia (MGDA-11) held in Kathmandu and Pokhara from 22nd - 28th October, 2013.

Over one hundred scientists, engineers and researchers from different countries had participated in the symposium, which was inaugurated by the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers, Mr. Khil Raj Regmi.

KU-UNESCO Meeting at SoA

 A stakeholder consultation meeting of the inception context analysis of the journalist safety project 2013 was held in School of Arts, Hattiban Complex.

As one of the key activities of the UNESCO/UNPFN project, 'Increasing the Safety of Journalists' an Inception Context Analysis was conducted by the Department of Languages and Mass Communication. The meeting was aimed at sharing the project findings and collecting feedback from the stakeholders for the preparation of the final report.

Mr. Axel Plathe, UNESCO representative to Nepal, started the meeting with a brief overview of the journalist security situation in Nepal, and stressed UNESCO’s interest in developing an effective national mechanism for journalist safety.

Dr. Nirmala Mani Adhikary, coordinator of the KU media studies program and the team leader of the inception context analysis, presented the findings and progress of the analysis, and addressed various questions raised by the stakeholders and participants.

Prof. Dr. Jangab Chauhan, Associate Dean of School of Arts, remarked on the issue of journalist safety from the historical perspective. He said, “The threat against journalists is not only a recent phenomenon, but was prevalent during various political events in the past including the period of struggle against the Rana and Panchayat regimes.

Mr. Laxman Datt Pant, coordinator of the Journalist safety project and head of the communication unit of UNESCO, described the Terms of Reference for inception context analysis.

 Mr. Shiva Gaunle, president of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, expressed concern over the increasing insecurity of journalists due to national level issues like election and political events.

Among the participants of the meeting were the representatives from International Media Support (IMS/NIMP), Nepal Police Human Right Cell, Federation of Nepalese journalist and UNESCO.

Mr. Shekhar KC, Research Assistant in the project, moderated the 2 hour long event.

International Conference on Forests, Soil and Rural Livelihoods in a Changing Climate

The Aquatic Ecology Centre, Kathmandu University, and the Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric), University of Life Sciences, Norway, in collaboration with the Nepal Agroforestry Foundation, Forest Action Nepal and Department of Forest Research and Survey, invite papers and posters from scholars and researchers to be presented at the International Conference on “Forests, Soils and Rural Livelihoods in a Changing Climate” to be held in Dhulikhel, Kave, Nepal, during September 28-30, 2014. The conference is an outcome of the Norwegian Research Council supported project “Forest and Soil Restoration and Land Use Change Impacts on Carbon Pools and Fluxes in the Himalaya: Research and Capacity Building in Nepal, (FORESC), which investigated different land use and forest management effects on soil and biomass carbon stocks as well as implications for local 
livelihoods.
