Prof. Dr. Deepak Prasad Subedi, Associate Dean of School of Science, KU as been nominated Associate Academician of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). The nomination was announced in a formal program organized on 27th of January, 2015 at the Academy to welcome the new academicians. The program was followed by presentation from the NAST scientists highlighting the recent activities of NAST.

Kick Off/Inception Meeting of the Environment Friendly Local Governance Program (EFLGP) successfully organized by DESE on 27th January 2015 in Main Campus, Dhulikhel .
Kick off/Inception Meeting of the EFLGP was held today dated the 26th January 2015 at the main campus of Kathmandu University in Dhulikhel. Meeting was attended by Mr Chakrapani Sharma,(Under-secretary from the Ministry of Federal Affairs & Local Development/Program Manager), Dr. Bibhuti Ranjan, Dr. Bed Mani Dahal, Dr. Rijan Bhakta Kayastha, Mr. Rajendra Bhandari, and Ms Anisha Tuladhar. Prof. Dr. Subodh Sharma was also present on the occasion in the capacity of Focal Person of the overall EFLGP. Meeting unanimously appointed Dr. Jha as Co-ordinator of the program, and decided that an internal meeting of the faculty members from the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering will soon select two faculty members from the Department into the ‘Selection and Evaluation Committee’ for the position of Volunteer M& E Officers (Environmentalist) to be announced officially in Gorkhapatra, date of publication as 071/10/13. This five membered Committee will have two additional members respectively from Office of the Dean (1) and Office of the Controller of Examinations (1). This committee will develop standard format for CV of the candidate, selection criteria, syllabus, question papers, conduct entrance examination, evaluate and finalize the list of selected 14 candidates.
This Inception Meeting also finalized the last date for the submission of Application as 10th Feb 2015 electronically addressed to Focal Person emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. The Entrance Examination to be held on 20 Feb 2015 from 8-9.30 am at KUSOM building, Balkumari, Lalitpur. Application Forms along with Syllabus for the preparation of Entrance Examination, Terms of Reference etc. will be made available/downloadable on Kathmandu University front page (www.ku.edu.np) effective from 28th January 2015.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed between the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD) and the School of Science on 25th January 2015. The Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development, with a greater realization, has induced a strategic concept to preserve environment through the intensive participation of the vulnerable community and people through Environment Friendly Local Governance Framework (EFLGP). The main objective of this programme is to enhance adaptive capacity of vulnerable groups including women to cope with impact of climate change by adopting integrated environment, climate and disaster resilient planning at local level. The programme is being implemented in 12 districts and 33 municipalities.
MoFALD aims to work together with the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Science to get the graduates in Environmental Science to implement EFLGP as Monitoring and Evaluation Officers in 4 districts and 10 Municipalities. Nawalparasi district with Ramgram, Kawasoti, Devchuli, Bardaghhat, Gaudakot, and Sunawal municipalities; Gorakha district with Gorakha municipalities; Lamjung district with Besishahar municipalities, and Kaski district with Pokhara and Lekhnath municipalities are identified as project area for Kathmandu University.
Program Management Unit (PMU) under the implementing ministry (MoFALD) will provide funds for the recruitment of the required Human Resources as well as for their regular orientation, training, monitoring and evaluation as and when necessary.
The MoU is executed as of the date of signing of MoU and will remain valid initially for 3 Years (From January 2014 to January 2017) and it can be renewed under mutual understanding between the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and MoFALD. Dr Subodh Sharma (firstname.lastname@example.org), Professor at the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering will remain as a focal person on behalf of Kathmandu University. The MoU was signed by the Dean of School of Science and witnessed by Dr. Bibhuti Ranjan Jha on behalf of the Department.

a. Duties and Responsibilities:
• This position is envisaged to be qualified professional position having technical competency in monitoring and supervising of the programmes.
• The incumbent will be stationed at the district/municipality office at district/municipality; however s/he will also technically support the respective offices at district/municipal levels.
• The incumbent is expected to support development partners including MoFALD, and other agencies and as appropriate on environment management issues related to Environmental Friendly Local Governance and beyond.
• The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of LDO/EOs. S/he works closely with team members at the EFLGP Central Office, DEECC Section, Municipality’s related Section. S/he shall coordinate DGEs/UGEs and District and Municipalities Social Mobilisation Committees as well.
b. The Key role of incumbent:
• Providing technical and administration support for ensuring implementation of EFLG Policy and strategies for environment management, climate change adaptation and disaster management
• Providing technical backup for ensuring coordination and building collaborative ownership of stakeholders on Environment Management
• Support establishing environment and climate change management policy to sustain EFLGP at local level and assisting the concerned stakeholders in implementation ; and
• Providing support for proper implementation of EFLGP
• Carrying out on going and periodic monitoring and collecting data/information in close coordination with the DDCs/DEECCs and Energy and Environment Section of Municipalities.
• Provide feedbacks to DDCs/ Municipalities for better improvements.
• Collaborate with the Environmentalist in ensuring timely monitoring of the field activities and reporting.
• Assist as well as build capacity of Local Bodies/ at the respective levels in proper reporting of Progress and accomplishments in a timely manner.
• On-going monitoring report will be produced on monthly basis by the M & E officers and Periodic Monitoring shall be done at the interval of six months or twice a year with special focus on performance and outputs.
• Collect all financial data (Programme and Activity-wise Budget and Expenditure) and Physical progress (Target and Achievement) and forward the progress report to EMS/PMU each month.
• All monitoring reports shall be forwarded to the Environmentalist/EMS/PMU.
Facilitation & Coordination
• Facilitate coordination with all the environment related programmes, poverty reduction programmes and their relation to local governance in order to build synergies to help produce desired results;
• Facilitate MoFALD in spearheading harmonization of environment management and disaster related intervention at different level; and
• Provide constant drive to the multi-stakeholder environment and local governance programme implementation and coordination committee.
Required Skills and Experience
• 1 year of relevant work experience in related field
• Experience of working on climate change, environment and disasters issues;
• Experience of working in a multi-cultural setting; and
• Experience of uses of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.)
Strong written and spoken skill of Nepali and English language. Preference will be given to those having knowledge of communicating in local/regional language

TERMS OF REFERENCE
Functional title: Finance Personnel
Duty station: Kathmandu University, School of Education and School of Arts
Duration: One-year contract with possibility of extension on an annual basis as per performance and need
Under the direct supervision of the Dean and/or as delegated by him, Finance Personnel will be responsible for planning, implementation, monitoring, reporting and assist in auditing of various projects. The key tasks include:
Project Account Management
Prepare for the payments and procurements as approved by Project Coordinator/Head of Dept/Dean and send it to Central Office
Assist in preparing project financial monitoring report for each donor on timely basis against budget.
Be responsible for all related finance and accounting works and work with the Account Officer of Central Office to prepare audited financial statements of various projects/donors.
Cooperate and coordinate with Project coordinator and other staffs in implementing the financial management guidelines and internal control.
Prepare/draft letters, correspondence regarding a variety of financial/accounting matters.
Assist to set up accounting system, including financial reporting forms and filing system for the /KUSOED/KUSOA, in accordance with the document and university procedures.
Collect the tuition fee from the students and maintain the records and timely send to Central Account.
Prepare vouchers with appropriate supporting documents including tax.
Enter financial transactions into the computerized accounting system and tax settlement
Inform and carry out timely submission of FMR and making payments to suppliers.
Maintain and operate petty cash of KUSOED/KUSOA and project/s for un-routine expenditure/small transactions.
Prepare monthly/quarterly project/ KUSOED/KUSOA accounts and its projection.
Prepare bank reconciliation statements and trial balance on monthly/quarterly basis.
Prepare monthly/quarterly fund accountability statements including trial balance.
Keep separate financial ledgers and accounts for KUSOED/KUSOA
Support other admin staffs of KUSOED/KUSOA in routine work.
Coordinate with the Account Officer of KU, Central Office and other finance staff of the university, Dhulikhel.
Monthly financial statement/s and project sheet to Dean
Timely submission of Financial Monitoring Report to donors against approved budget
Clean periodic reports (internal and external) with fully compliance to University Rules, donors’ requirement and government of Nepal’s tax system.
Masters or Four Year Bachelor degree in Business Administration (Finance and Accountancy) with work experience of at least two years and familiarity with at least two accounting software and government tax rules
Bachelor Degree in Business Studies/ Management with Specialization in Finance and Accounting with work experience of at least five years at Assistant Level or above; and familiarity with at least two accounting software and government tax rules.

Summary of the (NSNMP-2015)
Department of Natural Science, School of Science, Kathmandu University (KU) organized one-day national level symposium on “Nanotechnology for Novel Materials Processing (NSNMP)” on 18th January 2015 at the CV Raman mini-auditorium hall at Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel. Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, vice chancellor of KU, inaugurated the program. The opening program was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohan B. Gewali, Dean of School of Science. The symposium was coordinated by Dr. Bhim Kafle, assistant professor of chemistry.
The symposium included two plenary, five invited lectures and eight oral presentations by well known figures in the field of nanotechnology and material science of Nepal. Plenary lectures were delivered by Prof. Dr. Rameshwar Adhikari and Prof. Dr. Deepak Subedi.
While addressing, Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju encouraged the participants to dream big to solve the national problems like energy crisis, waste management, and health and hygiene facilities, giving an example of Israel. He informed Israeli first prime minister Devid Ben-Gurion envisioned to translate Negev desert into green land and this can be motivation to scientist of Nepal. Key note speakers Prof. Adhikari highlighted the devising the polymer based materials to address various problems, while Prof. Subedi demonstrated prospects of utilizing low temperature plasma facility available at Plasma Laboratory of KU for thin film deposition, waste water treatment and surface modification required for textile industries . The chairman Prof. Dr. Mohan B. Gewali highlighted the advantage of the program which enabled researchers from TU and KU to collaborate and share limited laboratory facilities available in two different institutions and thanked organizers for taking initiations and also suggested to incorporate more younger generations to participate in such programs.

Dr. Herb is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Calvin College, Grand Rapids, MI, USA. He finished his Ph.D in Physical Chemistry from University of Wisconsin Madison in 1998. He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Sydney, Australia from Dec. 1998 to Aug. 2000. From Aug. 2005-Aug. 2009, he was an assistant professor at the department of chemistry and Mallinson Institute of Science Education, Western Michigan University.
He teaches courses on general chemistry and physical chemistry including the laboratory instruction. He has taught specialized courses for Elementary educators, history of science education, Introduction to polymers, colloids and surfaces, molecular simulation, world energy production and global climate change. He has published several research papers in peer reviewed journals and also served as reviewer for many books related to his field of expertise.
Dr. Herb will be at Kathmandu University for seven months starting from January 2015. In addition to teaching at the University, he will be developing modules for active learning in chemistry that can be disseminated through workshop with college and high school faculty from our region.

Career Guidance Forum Organized by Department of Pharmacy
Department of Pharmacy organized a ‘Career guidance forum’, first phase of the project, Career Guidance Forum and My Life Road-Map Contest, on January 8 & 9, 2015, at CV Raman Main Auditorium, Kathmandu University. The project is supported by National Research Foundation of Korea. This forum was targeted mainly for third and fourth year BPharm students to guide them through immense career options after graduation. Eminent resource persons who have made remarkable contribution in the development of pharmacy profession in Nepal were invited.
First speaker of the program, Mr. Bal Krishna Khakurel, Director General, Department of Drug Administration provided relevant information on current policy and regulatory framework governing pharmaceutical sector and also highlighted the points in these framework where pharmacy profession will be integrated and widened. Mr. Bhupendra Bdr Thapa, Pharmaceutical Consultant & also one of our visiting professors, gave stimulating talk to the audience regarding choosing career options. Mr. Umesh Lal Shrestha, Managing Director, Quest Pharmaceuticals. Pvt. Ltd. and Mr. Jayabir Karmacharya, Manager of Factory Operation, Omnica Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., discussed on scope, challenges and opportunities for the graduates in pharmaceutical industries. Mr. Amar Mahato, Strategist, National Health Care Pvt. Ltd. was there in the forum to discuss with students on the scope in marketing sector.
Prof. Dr. Dharma Prashad Khanal, Head, Department of Pharmacy, Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences talked on the opportunities in research areas mainly in medicinal plants. Mr. Dhirendra Kumar Shah from Fleur Himalayan Pvt. Ltd. also discussed on the need of herbal drug research in our country.
Mr. Chain Kumar Bajracharya, Pharmacy In-charge, Kathmandu Model Hospital, and Mr. Babu Ram Adhikari, Pharmacy Manager, Grande International Hospital gave very good insight of hospital pharmacy profession in the country and provided rich information on scope and challenges for graduates in this sector.
