GES Celebrated International GIS day

Geomatics Engineering Society (GES) successfully conducted the World GIS Day 2017 on November 15 in collaboration with Nepal Geomatics Engineering Society (NGES). The students of Geomatics Engineering organized the program as a representative from Nepal inviting all other respective organizations working in the field of GIS such as Build Change, Survey Department, NAXA Pvt. Ltd, ADMC Pvt. Ltd, GIS Pvt. Ltd and so on. The special guest in the program was Mr. Ashok Kumar Byanju, the Mayor of Dhulikhel Municipality.



Similarly, Mr. Ganesh Prasad Bhatta, Director General of the Survey Department, was the chief guest. Moreover, Prof. Dr. Narendra Raj Khanal (Head of Department of Geology, TU), Mr. Narayan Regmi (Executive Director of Land Management Training Centre), Ms. Shanti Basnet (Director of Department of Land Information and Archive) were the guests of the program.

The program was started with the opening remarks from the Head of Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering, Asst. Prof. Dr. Prachand Man Pradhan. In the program all the students, faculty and the professionals discussed the use of GIS in different fields like hydropower, forest fire risk analysis, climate change, land use classification, earthquake assessment, ice melt measure and even the emerging concept trending in Nepal i.e. Smart City.

The major events of the programs were: GeoSpace Magazine Launch, Mapathon event together with local bodies of Dhulikhel Municipality, Project Demonstration, Stalls of different companies showing their geospatial tools and technologies, Treasure Hunt and many more. Major topics of the talk were "Role of open data in development", "Role of GIS in integrated development of local levels", "GIS in academia and research at Kathmandu University."

Overall, the program was successfully conducted on the theme “Think globally act locally”.

Mr. Sujan Sapkota, Vice-President of Geomatics Engineering Society was the event Co-ordinator.

Department of Computer Science and Engineer organized an interaction program on the title “Digital Signature” on 16 November 2017. Mr. Biplav Man Singh, Executive Chairman, gave a talk  about what is Digital Signature and how it can be implemented in institution like Kathmandu University. Registrar, Exam Controller, Chief Administrative Officer, Professors and Administrative staffs of Kathmandu University attended the talk program.

DLR Lab Organized a Workshop on MOOC in Scientific Research Writing

Digital Learning Research Lab (DLR Lab) organized a Workshop on MOOC in Scientific Research Writing” on 7 November 2017. The objective of this workshop was to develop and finalize the syllabus on scientific research writing. Hence Professors who are involved in several research projects were invited in the event.

Mr. Manoj Shakya and Mr. Sushil Shrestha, Assistant Professors at Department of Computer Science and Engineering, are the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator of this research project.

The program started with the presentation from Mr. Shakya, where he highlighted about the MOOC, its popularity and presented a draft curriculum developed by the research team. The presentation was followed by interactions. The program ended with the finalization of course syllabus.

This research project is funded by NAST (Nepal Academy of Science and Technology) and the project timeline is one year.

Dr. Swiercz Delivered Lectures...

Assoc. Prof. Miroslaw Swiercz, the Chair of Automatic Control and Electronics, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Bialystok University of Technology, Poland, visited the Dept. of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), School of Engineering (SOE), Kathmandu University, Nepal, from November 06, 2017 to November 10, 2017 under Teaching Staff Mobility of ERASMUS+ Program.

During this visit of Assoc. Prof. Miroslaw Swiercz at Kathmandu University, he delivered some lectures on the topic “Fault Detection Using Artificial Intelligent”. The participants in the lectures were faculties of SOE and students (both graduate and undergraduate) of the Dept. of EEE.

In addition, Dr. Swiercz observed the annual event EEPEX-17 of the Dept. of EEE and interacted with the students about their different projects. He was very much impressed and expressed that the level of the projects were high.

In the mean time, Dr. Swiercz interacted with Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Registrar of Kathmandu University, Prof. Dr. Bhupendra Bimal Chhetri, Dean of School of Engineering, and Assoc. Prof. Brijesh Adhikary, Head of Dept. of EEE about academic and research activities of two institutions.

Bialystok University of Technology and Kathmandu University have already signed Cooperative Agreement in Rector/Vice Chancellor Level on 13th October 2017.

Dr. Rabindra Bista, Asst. Prof. in the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, coordinated the activities -Cooperative Agreement Signing and visit of Dr. Swiercz- on behalf of Kathmandu University.


Dr. Pradhan and Team Got a Book Chapter Published

Dr. Prachand Man Pradhan, Acting Head and Assistant Professor, Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering, and his team got a Book Chapter titled "Structural Repair and Strengthening of RC Elements with Concrete Jacketing" published in the book Strengthening and Retrofitting of Existing Structures.
Other coathors of the Chapter include H.Rodrigues (Polytechnic Institute o of Leiria, Portugal),  A. Furtado (University of Porto, Portugal), P. Rocha (Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Portugal), and N. Vila-Pouca (University of Porto, Portugal).
The book was released on 14 October 2017 in Springer Nature from Singapore.

This is to notify that applicants indicated in the attached program-wise document verification and admission lists are selected for document verification and admission in the undergraduate programs of School of Engineering of Kathmandu University. Selected applicants are required to contact concerned department for document verification and admission by 12:00 Noon, 12 November 2017 (this Sunday). The verified candidates shall preferably complete the admission procedure by 3:00 PM, 12 November 2017. Please refer to earlier notices or contact respective department for verification and admission procedure.


If any seat remain still vacant in any program of School of Engineering by 12:00 Noon, 12 November 2017 (this Sunday), it will be offered to a candidate in Waiting List who is present at the Office of School Administration (Block-08, KU, Dhulikhel) based on merit. If there is no candidate from waiting list present, it will be offered to any other eligible candidate who submits expression of interest by the time mentioned.

As per the decision of the Admission Committee of the School, there will be no admission in any program of School of Engineering beyond 12 November 2017, Sunday due to attendance requirement and teaching advancement in the programs.



·        In the event that erroneous information or invalid documents have been provided by the applicant, intentionally or otherwise, the applicant will be rejected and admission offer will be invalidated.

·        Request for the extension of the deadlines will not be considered.

·        The bank at KU will be open till 3:00 PM on working days except Friday.

·        Candidates submitting withdrawal request after admission in the list will not be entitled to get any refund.

·        The admission offer is invalid if the candidate is already enrolled or enrolled-and-withdrawn admission, or submitted EoI in multiple numbers in undergraduate programs of School of Science and School of Engineering of Kathmandu University this year.

MoU signed between Kathmandu University (KU) and NEA Engineering Company (NEC)

On 06 November 2016, MoU has been signed between Kathmandu University (KU) and NEA Engineering Company (NEC) for cooperation in the field of energy and power sector development and contribution to increased cooperation between academic institution and power industry.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Registrar, KU and Mr. Hitendra Dev Shakya, Managing Director, NEC.

The major objectives of the cooperation between KU and NEC are:

1.       Collaboration for utilizing human resource and technical competence for delivering all aspects of engineering services for the energy and power sector.

2.       Sharing the services, facilities, and infrastructures available in its disposition and network for the development of energy and power sector.

3.       Explore possibilities for future cooperation in professional and commercial undertakings in relevant disciplines, jointly or in the association, at the National and International levels.

B)    B) Faculty Application for JST Sakura Science plan.

Faculties from related discipline are invited to apply for “Young Leaders' Workshop Training on Geo-Disaster Science and Mitigation Technologies” in Japan under JST Sakura Science Plan. The workshop training will be held from 1 – 9 Feb 2018 at Ehime University, Japan.

Role: - To lead the selected students and make proper reporting and arrangement during the workshop and training program in Japan.


1.       The applicant should never have been to Japan.

2.       Must be younger than 40 years of age.

3.       Must satisfy condition as set  ToR issued by JST Sakura Science Plan.


Process: - Submit an application with letter of interest mentioning reasons of eligibility for the program. The letter needs to be forwarded through the respective Dean’s offices to the office of External Affairs and Global Engagement at Kathmandu University by 12 November, 2017.

Note: - One faculty member will be selected by the JST Sakura science plan selection committee.
