Presentation of paper in an International Conference

 

Dr. Deepak Prasad Subedi, Associate Professor, Department of Natural Sciences, School of Science, KU  presented a research paper entitled “Surface modification of polymers by uniform atmospheric pressure argon glow plasma’’ in the Kathmandu Symposium on Advanced Materials (KaSAM-2012), International Conference, held during May 9-12, 2012. The program was organized by Nepal Polymer Institute.

INASP/Authoraid Workshop on “Research Writing Skills”

07 – 08 May 2012

 

A two day workshop on “Research Writing Skills” was held in Mini-auditorium, C. V. Raman Auditorium, Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, Kavre, Nepal on 07 and 08 May 2012. The workshop was organized by Department of Pharmacy, Kathmandu University with the support of International Network for Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP) and Authoraid. Prof. Panna Thapa, Dean, School of Science, inaugurated the program. There were 40 participants (MPharm/PharmD students and young pharmacy faculties) from three universities (Kathmandu University, Pokhara University and Purbanchal University). Prof. Panna Thapa, Dr. Uttam Budhathoki, Dr. Rajendra Gyawali, Dr. Ravi Shankar and Ms. Durga Bista were the resource persons in the workshop.

MOU signing ceremony between Kathmandu University, School of Engineering and  Ministry of Land Reform and Management, Land Management Training Centre.

 
The new MOU has been signed on Friday May 04, 2012 between Kathmandu University (KU), School of Engineering (SOE) and  Ministry of Land Reform and Management (MOLRM), Land Management Training centre (LMTC)  for the support of Geomatics Engineering Program of KU at Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, Kavre . The Dean, School of Engineering Prof, Dr. Bhola Thapa and Executive Director of LMTC, Mr. Nagendra Jha has signed on the MOU in the presence of Vice chancellor, Registrar, Dean School of Science, Chief Administration officer, HOD DCGE, Coordinators, faculties of Geomatics program and administration staffs of SOE, KU and Directors and  staffs from LMTC.

During the ceremony, Prof, Dr. Bhola Thapa mentioned on the progress of Geomatics Engineering program and the successful completion of first batch of Geomatics engineering. Similarly, Executive Director of LMTC Mr. Nagendra Jha expressed his pleasure for the progress of Geomatics Engineering program and highlighted on the changes in new MOU in comparison to previous MOU. As the concluding remarks, the vice chancellor, Prof. Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma pointed out the successful partnership of public organisation (KU) and Government (LMTC). Further, he added that society should get maximum benefit from the graduates of Geomatics Engineering of KU and that will be the indicator whether the Geomatics Engineering program of KU is success.

Interaction with 

Professor Dr. Ashok Deshpande & Rehan Sadiq, PhD, P.Eng.  

 

CEPTE has been organizing the Kathmandu University-Lecture Series (KULS) at Kathmandu University with the aim to give practical information on current issues of R&D, policy for their implementation and sustainable management infrastructure development to the students, faculties and invitees. Prominent experts in the field are invited to share their knowledge with KULS participants. The guest speakers of this 26th round of KULS interaction are Professor Dr. Ashok Deshpande from College of Engineering, Pune and Rehan Sadiq, PhD, P.Eng. from University of British Columbia (Okanagan).

Professor Ashok Deshpande, an environmental engineer holds PhD degree in Engineering and Technology and is the Founding Chair: Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing (BISC)-Special Interest Group (SIG)-Environment Management Systems (EMS), Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, University of California Berkeley Ca USA; and also Guest Faculty at UC Berkeley- a small place with big name. More importantly, Professor Lotfi Zadeh, the founder of fuzzy logic, after listening to many seminar talks, asked Professor Ashok Deshpande to be the Chair (BISC)-Special (SIG)-(EMS). 

 

Dr. Rehan Sadiq is currently an Associate Professor at Okanagan School of Engineering (UBC) since January 2009. For past twelve years he has been involved in research related to water supply systems, environmental risk analysis and infrastructure reliability. He has led numerous research projects funded by Water Research Foundation, UK Water Industry Research, and Canadian agencies including NSERC, Health Canada, Canadian Water Network, BC Oil & Gas Commission, and Infrastructure Canada. During this period, he has been successful in generating over $ 3M funding. He is an author of more than 200 peer-reviewed journal and conference articles, book chapters and technical reports. The citations for his research work now exceed 1150 in the Google Scholar and other scientific databases, and his current h-index is 20.

Project Work on IEE initiated as per MoU signed between MLD and KU/School of Science

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ministry of Local Development (MLD) and Kathmandu University, School of Science was signed at the Environment Management Section of MLD on 23 March 2012. The objectives of this partnership between MLD and KU/SOSc are to carry out the necessary environmental study, monitoring activities, enhance the capability of the Ministry, promote cooperation between government and academic institutions on local development issues, motive students towards quality environmental research and development, establish proactive link, and familiarize students with development processes etc. As a first activity, it was agreed that thirty-two fourth year Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering students shall be provided an amount not exceeding 10,47,900 for undertaking environmental monitoring of 53 rivers of Western, Mid Western and Far Western Regions covering Kailali, Kanchanpur, Dang, Banke, Kapilvastu, Nawalparasi, Tanahun and Kaski districts. Students will remain in field effective from 21st April 2012 for a period from 2-16 days for Auditing of the Initial Environmental Examination (IEE). The project is administered by the Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and coordinated by the Course Director of the course “Environmental Impact Assessment”.

Turkish Ambassador Inaugurated Girl’s Hostel at KUSoM

His Excellency Dr. Burak Akcapar, Ambassador of Turkey to Nepal inaugurated a residential building for girl students at Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSoM) Balkumari, Lalitpur on 11 April, 2012.

In the program Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma expressed gratitude to the Turkish government for the support to Kathmandu University. He further said that the University has planned to extend the hostel facility as part of its policy of offering residential programs to as many students as possible.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Akcapar expressed his happiness at being able to make some contribution to make it possible for girls of Nepal to access quality education and assured further support in the future.

The Turkish government has partially supported for the construction of the building. It has provided 100,000 US$ through Turkey’s Development Cooperation TIKA for the construction.

Prof. Subash KC, Dean, School of Management, expressed that the newly constructed building provides a further opportunity for female students to excel in their pursuit of quality business education.

Mr. C. P. Khetan, the Consul General of Turkey to Nepal was also presented in the inauguration function.

Kathmandu University Trailokya Nath(TN) Upraity Centre for Education announces one Lakh Rupees Education Award for 2012 to the Self-help Group for Cerebral Palsy, Dhapakhel, Lalitpur, Nepal.

The announcement was made in appreciation of the invaluable services of the Self-help Group that rendered for the alleviation of disabilities of children and youth of cerebral palsy through its caring and individualized educational, medical and therapeutic intervention programs.

The Self-help Group has been operating since 1986 in Kathmandu valley and later expanded over 15 districts across the country. Around 2000 children and youth affected by cerebral palsy are taking benefit annually from the centre.

The TN Centre for Education was founded with honor to Senator and Educationist late Dr. Trailokya Nath Upraity at Kathmandu University in 2011. The initiatives of the centre are Mrs. Satyabati Upraity, consort of Dr. T. N. Upraity, family and friends. TN Upraity Award for Education carries a purse of one Lakh Rupees and a citation. It is sponsored by Mr. Deepak Upraity, son of late Dr. TN Upraity. Kathmandu University TN Centre for Education announces Education Award every two year.

A high level delegation team led by Dr. Rajneesh Arora, Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Technical University (PTU) paid a visit to Kathmandu University on 5th April, 2012.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma welcomed to his counterpart Dr. Arora and his entire team members at a program organized by Kathmandu University.  Dr. Sharma said that internationalization of the institution is the need of the day. Kathmandu University is open to expand its relationship with international institutions in area of mutual interest and public good.

Dr. Rajneesh Arora has presented mission and vision of Punjab Technical University. He claimed that PTU is a state university and primarily focused on the need based academic programs through more than 400 affiliated colleges and the training centers across India. Dr. Gulshan Sharma, President of North India Management Association (NIMA) – Knowledge Partner of PTU, highlighted the objectives of the visit.  He further said that NIMA is working towards improving business climate and networking opportunities for Punjab Technical University.

Prof. Dr. Bhadra Man Tuladhar, Registrar of Kathmandu University expressed thanks for the visit and highlighted some possible areas of interest in which Kathmandu University and Punjab Technical University can make collaboration for mutual benefit.

Prof. Bhola Thapa, Dean, School of Engineering; Prof. Panna Thapa, Dean, School of Science; Head of Departments, Coordinators, Faculties and the University staffs were interacted with the delegates.

One-Day Media Research Conference at KU

The Department of Languages and Mass Communication, in collaboration with Martin Chautari, Kathmandu, organized a one day media research conference on 2 April 2012. The conference was attended by media teachers, researchers, practicing journalists and students of journalism, mass communication and media studies. The presentations included themes on Nepalese media as diverse as media research scenario, television and inclusion, female characters in radio dramas,  press freedom, book publication, coverage on climate change, representation of bilateral relations of Nepal with India and China, communication process, recruitment and continuity of journalists in Media houses.

Program on Interaction and Experience sharing of MEXT-Japan Study Program held on 4 April at Kathmandu University

His Excellency Mr. Kunio Takahashi, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal made a visit to Kathmandu University on 4th April, 2012 to take part in Interaction and experience sharing of MEXT Japan Study Program.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma welcomed Mr. Takahashi at the University. Dr. Sharma envisaged the mission and vision of Kathmandu University and recalled Japanese donors' support for physical facility development of the University. KU’s first building ‘Yamaji Block’ was built with the support of Yamaji Fumiko Culture Foundation, Japan; and the 'Pharmacy Block' was also supported by Japanese citizen Mr. Komatsubara Kenji.

To his address, Ambassador Takahashi recalled historical tie up between Japan and Nepal. Japanese monk, Ekai Kawaguchi, for the first time had visited Nepal in 1899. Since then there has been very close relationship between two countries. Today, Nepal is the ninth largest country whose citizens are studying in several Japanese Universities.  There exist strong possibilities for further collaboration between Japanese Universities and Kathmandu University in all levels.

Mr. Paras Khadka,
Graduate student of Mechanical Engineering Department at Kathmandu University who recently participated in Japan Study Program 2012 organized by MEXT- Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, science and Technology of Government of Japan shared the first hand information about the current status of universities in Japan and the value of studying and experiences in Japan in the revival process from the extraordinarily large scale disaster. The program was also attended by other participants from Padma Kanya Campus, Institute of Engineering Pulchowk, Institute of Medicine, Maharajgunj, Tri Chandra College,  who went to Japan under same program.

The program opened with the welcoming notes by Dr. Bim Prasad Shrestha, Head, Department of Mechanical engineering and Dr. Bhadra Man Tuladhar, Registrar of the University delivered the vote of thanks.
Ms. Natsuko Hashimoto, the Cultural secretary of Embassy of Japan was also present in the program. Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa and Prof. Dr. Panna Thapa, Deans of School of Engineering and School of Science respectively, Mr. Mukunda Prasad Upadyhyaya, Chief Administrative Officer along with University faculty, staffs were also present in the program. About 250 students from school of Engineering, school of science, school of medical science and Kathmandu University high school participated in the program.
