New Year Message from the Vice Chancellor

editorial | 16 April, 2018 09:16

Dear Colleagues and Students,

I extend my heartiest greetings on the occasion of New Year 2075 !

As the Vice Chancellor, I reiterate my commitment to always work hard towards taking the University to a newer height. I equally summon your unified support to this end, now that the models of success we established in the last 26 years need further consolidation and extension in today’s contexts. I believe the nation has high regards for and hopes from us as a community of hard working professionals, who have proved our worth by helping to change the landscape of Nepalese higher education in the last two and a half decades.

In this occasion:

1.     I urge everyone to remain assured that Kathmandu University will always strive to retain and expand its global identity. We have constantly conveyed to our well-wishers, the government authorities, alumni and other supporters that we are ready to contribute to the development of the country in any areas possible for us as an academic workforce. We have stressed that we adhere to autonomy in governance, and we invite support in both ethical and material terms, so that we will be able to safeguard our vision and mission and deliver our initiatives to their maximum.

2.    We are equally committed to establishing equitable administration by introducing for faculties, staffs and students more and more opportunities for upgrade and growth. I have been conducting regular dialogues with all the University officials, the Board of Trustees and individuals so as to define the avenues for revamping our working mechanisms so that the University progresses further.

3.    At present, apart from consolidating our functional units such as Departments and Schools and re-customizing basic pedagogical resources, we see a timely need to organize both international and local activities through offices for global engagement and community relations.

Finally, let us take our responsibilities as seriously as ever and contribute our best to help materialize our collective goals. May New Year 2075 bring inspiration for growth and prosperity to all of us.

Thank you.

Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha

Vice Chancellor

Dr. Thapa published a research article

isms | 04 April, 2018 09:00

Dr. Gunjan Bisht Thapa, Assistant Professor of Department of Chemical Science and Engineering with her student Ms. Sanjila Neupane of Department of Environment Science and Engineering, published a research article entitled “Arsenic removal through supercritical carbon dioxide-assisted modified magnetic starch (starch–Fe3O4) nanoparticles” in  a peer reviewed journal Nanotechnology for Environmental Engineering (Springer).

This study employs starch as biopolymer for coating onto MNPs (Fe3O4) surface and reports a noble method for preparation of starch-modified magnetic nanoparticles (starch-MNPs) in supercritical carbon dioxide reactor. The adsorption capacity of synthesized NPs for arsenite    [As (III)] was investigated by varying pH, temperature, adsorbent dose and analyte concentration as a function of contact time. Besides, reusability study of synthesized NPs was estimated and was utilized in field samples to compare their efficacy in total arsenic removal.
