Celebration of OPEN DATA Day by KU students and Faculties

The OPEN DATA day is celebrated by organising and participating in different activities on February 23, 2013 at Kathmandu. The program was organised by Young Innovations Pvt. Ltd, The World Bank and Mozilla Foundation where as Kathmandu University, Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering; Geomatics Engineering program, Wikimedia Nepal, Institute of Engineering (IOE), Nepal Engineering College, Open Source Ascol Circle and FOSS Nepal were the co-organiser of the program. The presentations on different open data issues stall visits Mapathon, Treasurer Hunt game, Hackathon were the events organised in the day.

                                                    

The Geomatics Engineering II year and III year students actively participated in these events. They were involved in editing, digitising aerial imagery and also in treasurer hunt game. Kathmandu University, Department of Civil and Geomatics engineering; Geomatics Engineering program kept stall to disseminate the information  about the various programs of  Kathmandu University, Geomatics Engineering students project and other activities carried out by the Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering.

The curious citizens, Journalist, students, scientists, graphic designers and policy makers visit the stall kept by various organisers and co-organisers. The organisers awarded certificate to the participated students in the events.

Vacancy Announcement

Technical Training center (TTC) of Kathmandu University (KU) has set the goal of providing skill oriented trainings to under privileged local youth for the enhancement of their livelihood. Currently, KU Project Implementation Unit (PIU) is developing curriculums in the areas of Automobile, Motorbike, Welding, Carpentry and Machining for 6 months, 1 year and 3 month – short course.

Under the supervision of PIU and Writing Experts, Writing Assistant will be responsible for assisting to organize and conduct workshops for curriculums, coordinating with field experts to ensure smooth operation of workshops for curriculum development.

1.     Position: Writing Assistant

2.     Duration : 4 months (Contract – based)

1)    Working hours: 9:00 ~ 16:00 (Sunday – Friday)

2)    Remuneration shall be decided upon qualifications and experiences.

 

Brief Job Description

1)    Gathering information on Field Experts and communicating with them throughout the curriculum development period

2)    Preparing arrangements for workshops and participating

3)    Supporting curriculum development team with logistical area

4)    Assisting to conduct workshops

5)    Drafting inputs from workshops to minutes/reports

6)    Performing any other duties as reasonably requested by the Writing Experts.

Qualification Required

o   Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering

o   Minimum of 3 years in general curriculum development work

o   A thorough understanding and knowledge of developing curriculum/short course manuals in Mechanical Engineering

o   Proven capacity to interact with Field Experts at diverse levels

o   Strong computer skills, including MS Word and Excel;

o   Proven communication skills in written and  spoken in English and Nepali

Annual Presentation of PhD Students of KU School of Science

KU School of Science (KUSOS) organized a half day annual presentation of PhD students on 15 February, 2013 in the C.V. Raman Auditorium, KU Central Campus, Dhulikhel, Kavre. Twenty eight (28) students who have been registered for doctoral studies in four of KUSOS academic departments (Biotec, Environmental Science, Natural Sciences and Pharmacy) presented their work progress. Present in the programme were KUSOS Research Committee members and also the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Academicians Professor Dr. Mohan Bikram Gewali and Professor Dr. Pramod Kumar Jha; representative from Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC); Professor Dr. Bhola Thapa, Dean of KU School of Engineering (KUSOE); Heads and Coordinators of KUSOS, PhD supervisors and doctoral students of KU School of Engineering. The Founding Vice Chancellor of KU Professor Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma was also present on the occasion.

Professor Dr. Panna Thapa, Dean and Chair of Research Committee of KUSOS. Chaired the session.

KUSOS has produced total of 14 PhD graduates until 2012. Out of these graduates 9 are in Environmental Science, 3 in Mathematics and 2 in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Currently 32 students are pursuing doctoral studies in KUSOS.

The Department of Civil and Geomatics Engineering (DCGE) has been organizing the
Kathmandu University-Lecture Series (KULS) at Kathmandu University with the aim to give practical information on current issues of R&D, policy for their implementation in the field of Civil and Geomatics to the students, faculties and invitees. The prominent experts in the field are invited to share their knowledge with KULS participants. The chief guest of this round of KULS interaction is Prof. Dr. Prem Prakash Bahuguna, Professor, Dept. of Mining Engineering, Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, India.

Prof. Prem Prakash Bahuguna completed his Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering in 1981 (Advance surveying & Photogrammetry) getting a Gold medal and Ph.D (Civil Engineering) in 1993 from Roorkee University. His fields of specialization in Geomatics and Advanced Surveying (Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing), Modern surveying (GPS and GIS), and Mine surveying (co-relation survey). He has 14 years field experience as Survey Officer in Survey of India and teaching mine surveying and advanced survey to undergraduate and post graduate engineering students in different positions from Lecturer to Professor. He has numerous publications in Civil and Geomatics Engineering and handled numbers of consultancy Projects. He has started a new M.Tech course in Geomatics Engineering at the ISM Dhanabd where he has been heading the Geomatics/ Mine Surveying Section of the department of Mining Engineering for last 15 years.

Artists from Republic of Karelia performed Russian Ball Dance Show in CV Raman Auditorium

Kathmandu University (KU) and Russian Centre of Science & Culture organized ‘Karelian Fascination’ the Russian ball dance show at the CV Raman Auditorium, Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel on February 6, 2013. The program was presented by the famous Dance Ensemble “Rhythm” from the Republic of Karelia of the Russian Federation.  

Prof. Jangab Chauhan, HoD of Department of Languages and Mass Communication started the program with its highlights. Prof. Bhadra man Tuladhar gave his welcome and thank you speech in the beginning. A short film about the Republic of Karelia, which is known for its carefully preserved folk traditions, natural beauty and unique spirits was screened. The audience witnessed the beauty of ‘Kizhi’, an island of Karelia, through the short film.

Founder vice chancellor of KU Prof. Suresh Raj Sharma, Madame Sharma, deputy director of Russian Centre of Science & Culture Anastasia Khokhlova along with Faculty members, Students and Staff of KU were present in the performance. In the program, Prof. Ramesh Maskey  sang a Nepali and two Russian songs.

Prof. Bhadra Man Tuladhar, the Registrar gave souvenirs to all performers of Kerelian Fascination. Two books of Russian Literature translated into Nepali by KU Professor Dr. Jangab Chauhan were presented as gift to the leader of the ensemble, Olga Zaporozhets.

Mr. Sushil Shrestha and Mr. Jae Min Kim published a paper entitled "Bridging the Gap between E-Learning and Knowledge Management (KM): An enhancement of Moodle system by applying KM Functions "  on International Journal of Science and Technology.

Mr. Shrestha is a  faculty member at Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Mr. Kim, an E-Learning expert from KOICA, worked as an E-Learning Advisor in Kathmandu University.

Inauguration of Kathmandu University Hattiban Premises

A special function organized by the School of Arts, KU at its new premises in Hattiban was jointly inaugurated by Founder Vice Chancellor Prof. Suresh Raj Sharma and Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha on January 31, 2013. The program was attended by Controller of Examinations, Deans, Director of Student Affairs, faculty, administrative staff and members of the School of Arts.

The function was chaired by Senior Professor Dr. Jangab Chauhan, HoD of Languages and Mass Communication. Prof. Mahesh Banskota, Dean of School of Arts, Prof. Dal Bahadur Adhikary, Chairman of  National College, and Prof. Jangab Chauhan welcomed Prof. Suresh Raj Sharma, Madame Sharma, and Prof. Shrestha with bouquets. After the welcome speech by Prof. Banskota, each of the department of School of Arts presented different performances. 

The Centre for Arts and Design displayed paintings and presented gifts to Prof. Sharma, Madame Sharma and Prof. Shrestha.

The Department of Development Studies organized the release of School of Arts Indicative Strategic Plan. The students recited a song and a poem while they also presented a gift to Madame Sharma.

The Department of Languages and Mass Communications displayed a video. Mr. Hem raj Kafle sang a Nepali song.

The Centre for Buddhist Studies presented Manjushri statue to Founder VC, and a book "Middle Way" (translation of Classic Buddhist) prepared by CBS Faculty to VC and a Shakyamuni Statue to the School of Arts.

Artists from Department of Music sang the KU song with another special composition prepared by themselves.
