Orientation on University-Wide Startup Weekend and Nepal Infrastructure Summit 2017

An orientation and interaction program on “University-Wide Startup Weekend” and “Nepal Infrastructure Summit 2017” was held on January 12, 2017 at C.V. Raman Auditorium, Kathmandu University Central Campus, Dhulikhel. The event was attended by over 250 students and faculty members from School of Engineering, School of Science, School of Law, and School of Medical Sciences.

Mr. Suman Shakya, Cofounder of Nepal Entrepreneurs’ Hub (NEHUB) provided the information about the University-Wide Startup Weekend bieng organized by NEHUB in partnership with Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) during 7 – 9 April 2017.

The Startup Weekend events span the course of a weekend (approximately 54 hours), and are generally composed of 60-120 participants. In addition to attendees, the event attracts speakers, coaches, panelists (generally well-respected members of the local startup community or notable names in the industry), and various sponsors and company representatives. A good share of teams end up working together beyond the startup weekend to build a fully operating startup, and others take with them the bootcamp experience and a network of like minds.

Bing organized for the first time in Nepal, University-Wide Startup Weekend aims to bring together ALL SEVEN SCHOOLS of Kathmandu University with the primary objective to identify innovative and sustainable business ideas within Kathmandu University.

During the preceding session, Ms. Malvika Subba, CEO of Idea Studio, presented about the Nepal Infrastructure Summit 2017 and Infrastructure Idea Hunt. Nepal Infrastructure Summit 2017 is being organized during 19-20 February 2017 by Confederation of Nepal Industries (CNI) in association with Government of Nepal and Youth Community for Nepalese Contractors, in which Idea Studio is the Infrastructure Idea Hunt Partner. The top three ideators will get the opportunity to present their ideas in the Infrastructure Summit. (The deadline for submission of ideas is 27 January 2017. The Orientation program was organized by Kathmandu University Central Campus, Dhulikhel, and was coordinated by Mr. Bibhu Ratna Tuladhar along with Mr. Pratisthit Lal Shrestha from School of Engineering and Mr. Parash Mani Timilsina from School of Science.

 


 

   

3rd U-Learning Training was conducted

3rd U-Learning Training was conducted at Kathmandu University.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Kathmandu University successfully conducted a three day training program on Ubiquitous learning held on 8-10 Jan 2017. The theme of the training was Equal Education Opportunities by U-Learning technology. Dr. Manish Pokharel, Head of the Department of Department of Computer Science and Engineering gave an opening speech on the importance of U-Learning technology in Education and its challenges on implementation in the context of Nepal.

 

The participants were primarily from public-private school from various districts of Nepal. Selection of School was done on the basis of equality with respect to remote and urban location. Dr. Purusottam Kharel was a lead person to conduct this training and Mr. Cavin Shin from South Korea was the resource person.

The training concluded with a joint commitment from all participants on enhancing the scope of U-learning system in education. Kathmandu University U- Learning Research and Development Unit has already selected three more schools with the support from National Research Foundation (NRF- By Kim Jonghun) South Korea. The newly selected schools are from Dolakha, Sindhuli and Saptari districts. 

This project is a joint collaboration of Kathmandu University, Tribhuvan University, NSDevil South Korea and National Research Foundation of South Korea.

CEP conducted a workshop with LAIKA Academy and ABARI

Community Education Project (CEP) conducted a workshop in collaboration with LAIKA Academy and ABARI.

An interactive session between students and faculties associated with Laika Academy of Australia, Adobe and Bamboo Research Initiative (ABARI) and Community Education Project (CEP) of Kathmandu University was held on Jan 11, 2017 at Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel. 

Mr. Sushil Shrestha (Assistant Professor and Project Coordinator) presented about Kathmandu University and the Community Education Program to the participants. Then KU students involved in CEP shared their experience of participating in community projects. Similarly, students of Laika Academy also shared their experiences of participating in the Laika - ABARI education program. In an interactive session, all participants provided feedback to the prototypes that Laika - ABARI students built to solve small problems in the community designed with a collaborative design process.

Laika Academy and ABARI designed an educational experience program for undergraduate students of Australia to learn about and experience heritage, arts, community, and natural resource in different places of Nepal, viz. Kathmandu, Kavrepalanchok and Chitwan. As a part of the educational program, a workshop was conducted at Kathmandu University in collaboration with Community Education Program of Kathmandu University.

 

All participants later visited the material testing lab being built by ABARI using bamboo and earth inside Kathmandu University Central Campus premises.

Preliminary Meeting between DOCSE and SIM University

Dr. Manish Pokharel, Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Ms. Jennifer Mei SZE ANG, Head, Common Curriculum and Ms. Cynthia Chang, Head, Service Learning, SIM University, Singapore agreed to carry out one pilot project in Service Learning jointly by the students of both universities.

During their visit to KU, delegates from SIM University expressed their desire for possible collaboration with DOCSE in Service Learning.

 


 

 

 

Mr. Shrestha Presents in International Conference

Mr. Sushil Shrestha, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DoCSE), presented a research paper in The 2nd International Conference on Next Generation Computing (ICNGC 2017), held during 5-7 January 2017 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

 

 

Mr. Shrestha's presentation focused on the importance of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) Design Principles in making better and user-friendly interface.

The conference was organized by Korean Institute of Next Generation Computing and University of Information Technology, VNU-HCM, Vietnam.

Prof. Janardan Lamichane with his students (Deepak Sharma, Tara Shrestha, Naresh Rapal, Satiz C Poudel, Sujan Shrestha, Surekshya Sharma) working under Department of Biotechnology has published a research article.
