Dr. Bhim P. Kafle, Assistant Professor of Dept. of Natural Science,has been awarded

Dr. Bhim P. Kafle, Assistant Professor of Dept. of Natural Science,has been awarded the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Award for this year. As per the citation, Dr. Kafle has been selected for researching on development of theoretical model for doping of metal ions in thin film of fullerenes (third allotrope of carbon) for solar cell purpose, and also for investigating on uni-molecular decay processes of carbon clusters.

Grand Welcome Day observed

Office of the Director, Student Welfare, and Second Year students of the School of Science and School of Engineering, observed Grand Welcome on 11 Dec 2012 at Central Campus in Dhulikhel. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bibek Baral and Mr. Hem Raj Kafle, Associate Directors of Student Welfare, emphasized on the importance of such activities, however management has always been a challenge. Prof. Dr. Subodh Sharma, Director of Student Welfare welcoming the first years, also appreciated second year students for their enthusiasm, without which this event would have not been possible. He further added that this tradition was introduced at Kathmandu University at the time when only I.Sc. programme was running. With so many different academic programmes being added and the number of students intake increasing each year at KU, it is indeed becoming very difficult to organize big events. But with highly discipline students, like this years’ batch and of course the second years, and their enthusiasm anything can be possible.

Present on the occasion were, besides first and second year students, Controller of Examinations, Chief Administrative Officer, other distinguished faculty members and staff. Main highlights of the event were besides performance from second and first years, the KU band, and the Night Band. The organizers expressed their heartfelt thanks to all those who were present on the occasion and those who were supporting it from a distance.

The Biomass Stove Testing Lab at Department of Mechanical Engineering has received research grant from JICA Headquarter Tokyo for feasibility study on CDM Project in Nepal.

The Lab invites application for researcher for this project.

Shortlisted candidates will be informed for interview at Stove Testing Lab, Kathmandu University.

Preference will be given to female graduates from School of Engineering or School of Science with academic excellence and proficiency in report writing. The application along with CV should be submitted before 14^th December, 2012 to the following address:

On December 2^nd ,2012, Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University(CIKU) holds the 4^th HSK Test. 64 examinees registered for HSK Test Level I-V, among which four come from India. The number of HSK examinees in 2012 is 152, which is nearly double that in the previous year.

Asst. Professor Nirmala Mani Adhikary accomplished Ph.D.

Nirmala Mani Adhikary, Asst. Professor of Media Studies at the Dept. of Languages and Mass Communication, has accomplished Ph.D. in Communication from Nepal Sanskrit University. The title of his Ph.D. Theis is: "The Bhatta-Mimamsa Philosophical Study of Communication." Through his research, Dr. Adhikary has explored the relevance of the Bhatta School of Mimamsa philosophy to the modern discipline of communication, theorized communication from the perspective of the Bhatta School, and constructed a unique model: "The Bhatta-Mimamsa Model of Communication." It is to note that this is the first-ever Ph.D. in Communication from within Nepal (from any of the Nepali universities).

Community Education Tour to Charikot, Dolakha

The community education tour of Computer Science and Engineering second year students was done in Charikot, Dolakha from Nov 4 – Nov 10. After the feasibility study of the area from the faculties of Department of Computer Science and Engineering, major areas in which the student can contribute were identified. Major identified areas in Charikot premises were: government offices, school, hospital, NGO, hotels, Dolakha Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Three faculties Sushil Shrestha, Sushil Nepal and Santosh Khanal were involved in the community education tour. Students contributed in different sectors by solving their IT related problems and by providing short term training.

Overall the tour was a grand success. The exposure of our students in different sectors helps our students to cooperate and deal with different kinds of people. In addition to that some of them got opportunity to work on real projects. We also got an appreciation letter from all the sectors for the contribution done by our students.

Training courses for rural communities

CALL FOR PROPOSAL

Community Education Pilot Project (CEPP) is a program run by School of Engineering, Kathmandu University (KU) that intends to work in collaboration with national and international organizations and agencies for improving the quality of life of the rural people through community education programs.

CEPP, in cooperation with E-learning Project, invites proposals for possible funding support on the development of skill oriented, fully online or hybrid, courses for the rural communities of Nepal. The proposals are welcome from engineering as well as non-engineering areas.

Maximum funding of Rs. 35,000 will be awarded to the selected applicants for the development of each 12-15 hour long course. Teaching materials and tools required for the training for which additional funding is sought shall be clearly indicated in the proposal. Applicants may make a request to use e-learning facilities at KU.

The deadline for the submission of the proposals is December 7, 2012. The outcome of the competition will be announced on December 11, 2012. All the course contents and expenditure details must be submitted to CEPP by December 31, 2012.

The call for proposal is open to interested firms or individuals.

Community education pilot project (CEPP) organized a community education tour

Kathmandu University, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in association with community education pilot project (CEPP) organized a community education tour for undergraduate second year students from 22-26 Nov 2012. Faculties and staff accompanying the students were Mr. Jayanand Bokati, Mr. Madhav Prasad Pandey, Mr. Neeraj Dhungel, Mr. Roshan Ranjit and Mr. Sunil Khanal.

The objective of the tour was to expose KU students and faculties to rural environment so that the relevant project topics that need engineering applications can be explored. The tour also intended to practically implement the academic knowledge of the faculty staffs and students in the rural communities.

Students participated in various community education activities organized at Shyame Wangphel Higher Secondary School, Shyaphrubesi including a short training on house wiring and demonstration of installation of solar home system to the students of grade 9 and 10. Community education activities also included short presentations on various technical topics. In addition, students visited different villages of upper Rasuwa including Syaphru, Chilime, Goljung, Gatlang and Timure.

Report of the workshop on the review of the curriculum of B.Sc. in Applied Physics

Department of natural sciences, school of science, organized a one day workshop on 22^nd of November 2012. The main objective of the workshop was to review the curriculum of B.Sc. in Applied Physics and collect suggestions from the experts from universities, industries and other related organizations about the possible job opportunities for the graduates of this program. The program was held at at the CV Raman Auditorium Hall, KU, Dhulikhel. The program was attended by Professors of Physics from the Central Department of Physics and Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University and registrar, Deans of school of science and engineering, controller of examination, HoDs and coordinators of different departments and members of the subject committees of Physics and Mathematics, Kathmandu University. Delegate from public service commission was also present in the program.

The program was started by a welcome speech from Prof. Panna Thapa, Dean of School of Science. In his speech, Prof. Thapa also highlighted the main objective of the program. It was followed by an introduction to the program by Dr. Deepak Prasad Subedi, Head of the department of Natural Sciences. Prof. Bhadraman Tuladhar, Registrar, KU and Prof. Bhola Thapa, Dean of School of Engineering also expressed the opinions about the need to review the curriculum regularly to meet the demand of rapidly changing trend in education.

The experts participating in the workshop were divided in three groups for discussion. The first group consisted of Professors of Physics including an expert from mathematics & engineering. Similarly, the other two groups consisted of experts from mathematics and Engineering/pharmacy/public service commission respectively. After the discussion, representative from each group: Dr. Raju Khanal, Dr. Dipak Raj Adhikari and Dr. Kanhaiya Jha presented their reports with valuable suggestions and recommendations for the improvement in the curriculum.

The delegate from the Public Service Commission, Mr. Sarmon Lal Shakya, suggested the need to start an official process through concerned ministries to explore the potential job sectors for the graduates of the program to enter the government service.

The program was concluded after collecting all the suggestion from the experts.

Dr. Sharma Honored by Vocational Excellence Award!!

Rt. Hon'ble President of Nepal Dr. Ram Baran Yadav conferred to Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Kathmandu University, by Gopal-Kamala Raj Bhandari Rotary Award for Vocational Excellence for 2012-13 for his contribution to the education sector of Nepal in a function organized by Rotary International-Nepal at Shital Niwas on Tuesday, 20 November, 2012.

The award, which carries a purse of Rs. 1 million, was established in 2012, and is considered one of the biggest social service awards in Nepal.

A five member selection committee headed by former Chief Justice Anup Raj Sharma has recommended to Dr. Sharma for this prestigious award for his enormous contribution to education sector particularly for establishing training centers and academic institutions like Kathmandu University, and Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) to provide training and quality education in the country.

Accepting the great of honor, Dr. Sharma thanked to the organizers and recalled his past experiences that he had encountered during his almost five decade long professional career.

Kathmandu University which he has established and served with the capacity of Vice Chancellor for 21 years is not only the successful institution that he created in the country. Other success stories credited to him were the establishment of Science and Technology Campus, Dharan; Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT); and Kathmandu Valley Campus.

Dr. Sharma recalled his earlier days when he was deputed to serve as a Member- Secretary of Higher Education Committee under the Ministry of Education; he took initiation to establish Technical and Vocational Training Centers in different remote areas like Jumla, Jiri, Dhankuta, Lahan and so on. These centers were not only succeeded to establish on such remote areas rather were succeeding to produce mid-level skilled workers for nation development process.

President of Rotary International Mr. Sakuji Tanaka, and Rotarians were present in the award ceremony.
